Archeology in the Field (cont.)

Here students continue to filter excavated soil through a 1/4-inch wire mesh to locate small artifacts they might have missed

 

 

Field sites are hectic places. While students screen dirt in one area, digging continues in another. Meanwhile, a third area might be devoted to sorting found objects, making notes, and cataloging the information taken on site.

 

Sometimes archeological excavations take researchers below the water table at a given location. The work gets considerably more difficult...and muddy...when that happens.

 

At left are a few of the artifacts found in the mud--a pottery shard, a sharpened flake of flint (chert), and a projectile point.
