Lecture Notes

Most of us question our femininity and masculinity but not whether we are male or female. However, for gender variant individuals, "what sex am I?" is a real and painful question. For the topic of gender variations we will discuss transgenderism, disorders of sexual development and intersex, the unclassified form of abnormal development, gender identity disorder, and transsexuality. The answer to the question "what sex am I?" reinforces that psychosexual development is influenced by a multiple factors including exposure to androgens, sex chromosome genes, brain structure, as well as social circumstance and family dynamics.

The Gender Continuum is a contrast to the binary gender view. The concept of gender is on a continuum with a multitude of gender variant identities.
