The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that there are two primary ways in which STIs are transmitted. There are discharge diseases and genital ulcer diseases. Discharge diseases are STIs that are transmitted via body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, etc. Examples of discharge diseases are HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomonaisis. Genital ulcer diseases are STIs that are transmitted through contact with infected skin. Examples of genital ulcer diseases are herpes, syphilis, and human papillomavirus virus.
